Buddhism vs. Christianity
By Evan Grey
5-13-08

People practice many different religions around the world. There are many different religions and all differ from their background, symbols, major beliefs, and ceremonies or holidays. Two religions that largely differ from each other are Buddhism and Christianity. These religions differ from each other through their background, major beliefs, and holidays.

One thing that makes Buddhism and Christianity different is their background. Something that is very different from the two religions is the size of the followers of the religion. Buddhism makes up about 6% of the world’s population which is a section, but not a very large section. Christianity is the largest religion and currently has about 2 billion followers. There is a very large difference in the size of followers in the religion. Another thing that is different in the religion is their spiritual leaders. In Buddhism a spiritual leader is considered to be a Dalai Lamas, which means “teacher whose wisdom is as great as the ocean.” In the Catholic section of Christianity, which is the largest, there are 4 rankings of spiritual leaders, Priest, Bishop, Cardinal, and The Pope.

Another thing that makes Buddhism and Christianity different is their major beliefs. In Buddhism their major beliefs are basically all tied together in “The Four Noble Truths.” According, to the The Four Noble Truths suffering is caused by both selfishness and greed. In Buddhism they believe that these two things cause all suffering in life. The Four Noble Truths covers these topics. In Christianity it is a completely different situation. In Christianity they believe that Jesus is the son of God. This is a major believe of theirs. They also follow 10 commandments, which they believe God made and they believe that to live by these commandments.

A third thing that makes Buddhism and Christianity different is their holidays. In Buddhism there is one main holiday. This holiday is called Vesak. This holiday doesn’t take place any certain time of year. This holiday is the day that is celebrated for a Buddha’s enlightenment and to celebrate a Buddha’s life. The Buddha is a man who was the first person to reach enlightenment. This means that he is considered to be in “The Middle Path,” meaning that a person is not indulged or without a lot. This is very different to the holidays in the Christian religion. In the Christian religion there are two main holidays. The holidays are Christmas and Easter. Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birth. On this holiday most people receive and give gifts to each other. The other holiday in the religion is Easter. This is the day that Jesus was resurrected from the dead. They believe that God lifted Jesus from his grave to the heavens. These are religions differ greatly from through the holidays they celebrate.

In conclusion, Buddhism and Christianity are very different through their background, major beliefs, and the holidays they celebrate. In my opinion, I think these two religions couldn’t differ anymore. One religion is about your self, and one is worshiping a god. They are very different through the topics that have been covered and in that face.

Final Draft of Hydropower Persuasive Essay

Global warming is having a HUGE impact on the environment and in the future could change the way we live. Even so, we still have some time to save our earth. Alternative energies are the way to do this. Hydropower is a good alternative energy that is renewable as well. Hydropower already provides Vermont 22% of its total electricity. Hydropower doesn’t give off any green house gas emissions and is fairly safe for the environment. It is also very low cost energy and the power can be traveled far away from the water source. Vermont has 174,000 kilowatts of undeveloped hydroelectric potential according to several sources. I think that if there is so much potential electricity in Vermont that we need to invest in hydropower. Hydropower is a good alternative energy for Vermont because of Vermont's landscape, and it is more renewable than any other source.

Hydropower is good for Vermont because of Vermont’s landscape. There are numerous places where hydro power plants could be set up. Vermont has about 45 rivers located all over the state. Obviously, not all rivers are suited for having hydropower plants, but numerous could be. In Essex, there already is a power plant that is on the Winooski River. Water is not scarce in Vermont. Vermont rarely experiences drought, and Vermont gets a lot of precipitation per year. I think these facts prove that hydropower is good for Vermont. Vermont’s landscape is perfect for it. An average month, (not including winter), gets about 3-4 inches of rain. This means that the rivers will be raging, making the water wheels generate more electricity, which is good.

Hydropower is more renewable than any other source. Because of the water cycle, water is almost guaranteed to keep coming, compared to solar power, which doesn’t store any energy once it’s cloudy out. Or compared to wind power, if the wind is not blowing at all it doesn’t store any energy. You can’t rely on those types of sources like you can on hydropower. Hydropower is guaranteed to keep coming; the river isn’t going to just stop moving or stop running, especially in Vermont. In some scenarios, the river that a hydroelectric dam is generating its electricity from could dry up. This is very unlikely to happen, and it’s almost guaranteed not to in Vermont. Vermont hasn’t experienced a drought in many years. Vermont also gets a lot of precipitation per year.
Even though there are many advantages to hydropower there may be reasons why you wouldn’t want Vermont to invest in hydropower. First of all, the water wheels can damage the surrounding environment. Second, hydroelectric dams are going to have to be built, compared to have the solar panels give direct electricity or have the wind turbines giving direct electricity to homes and buildings. A way to solve the first problem is to attract the ecosystem downstream or upstream from the dam, so the water wheels don’t damage surrounding ecosystem. Even though it does damage the surrounding ecosystem a little bit it’s only in a small area which the water wheels are located. The ecosystem far away is not affected at all. A solution to the second problem is that yes, both the other sources do give electricity directly to the recipient, but the dams themselves barely affect the environment around them. Also, solar panels cost a lot of money. For the solar panels to follow the sun, you need a tracking motor. These motors cost $1000-$2000! Also the solar panels themselves cost a lot of money. Also the energy that is collected by the solar panels is DC. Most all appliances run on AC power. So to turn the DC power into AC you need an AC/DC converter. These can cost over $200! Also, wind power cost a lot of money. Wind turbines cost between $12,000 and $55,000! You also need to buy an AC/DC converter as well! When you choose hydropower you don’t run into the problems of cost. Even with these disadvantages there are solutions to these problems. The other sources have many other disadvantages far worse than these. The advantages of hydropower definitely out way the disadvantages of hydropower.

In conclusion, hydropower is the best renewable source for Vermont because of Vermont’s geography and in general it is more renewable than any other source. The world is changing fast because of the damage we have done to it. We NEED to do something about it now! Hydropower can offer a large amount of relief to global warming. Think about it, would you rather make change or would you rather have our earth destroyed forever. If you want to make change, than I think Vermont should take a step in investing into hydropower to cut down on green house gases.

Hydropower is more renewable and less noticeable than any other source. Super Tuesday

Super Tuesday is a day of many primary votes in America. There are 22 states that voted in the primary on Tuesday, February 5. There are 5 main canidates for the running of President. On the Republican side there is Mike Huckabee, John McCain, and Mitt Romney. On the Democratic side there is Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama . Here are some statistics of both the Democrat and Republican parties.

Republican Party:

California:
1. McCain- 42%
2. Romney- 34%
3. Huckabee- 12%

New York:
1. McCain - 51%
2. Romney - 28%
3. Huckabee - 11%

Minnesota:
1. Romney - 41%
2. McCain - 22%
3.Huckabee - 20%

Democratic Party:

California:
1. Clinton - 52%
2. Obama - 42%

New York:
1. Clinton - 57%
2. Obama - 40%

Minnesota:
1. Obama - 67%
2. Clinton - 32%

Source: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22997326/

I think that it is a fairly close race for both parties. For the Republican party, I think that Huckabee came back from some large losses in other primaries, even so, he has come back and did win a handful of states. I think in the end it will be between McCain and Romney. I think in the end McCain will win the majority of the vote. On the Democratic side, I think that it is a very close race. For me it is too close to call which one will win the democratic side. I am hoping that Hilary Clinton wins. I believe she does have the experience and I agree with her views on different subjects. Even if she doesn't win I think that Barack Obama is a great canidate himself. I think that if Hilary Clinton runs as president and Barack Obama runs as vice president, (or visa versa), that they would definitely win the election. I think that this has been one of the more exciting races in the running for president in a while. It is a close race and I think that the election will be a very large change in the way our country functions.
